Out at Sea – Floyd’s Pelican Bar

I’ve seen many pictures of Pelican Bar and the supporting stories were simply exhilarating. I don’t drink alcohol but a structure is the middle of the sea is something I need to see for myself!

If you have a boat, why not offer trips to Pelican Bar.

With Google maps as our guide and a little knowledge of where we could get the boat, we drove in the direction of Parottee Pond, St Elizabeth. This place is to the east of Black River, the capital of St Elizabeth. On the way we saw a sign advertising trips to Pelican Bay and we inquired accordingly. With a little negotiation, we managed to pay $1000 per person. The original cost was $1500.

After a little pushing and team work, we got on the boat for the 20 minute trip to Floyd’s Pelican Bar. The trip offered very scenic views of St Elizabeth’s coastline and the hills that guarded the treasures. Along the coast were numerous old buildings, houses and occasional boats. The panoramic view of the mountains and ocean as the sun beamed its warmth on us created the perfect vacation setting.

As we approached the attraction, we could see numerous visitors and even new ones approaching, by boat of course. The structure has a main area where you can purchase drinks and food (fish, rice, etc.). There are also seats and tables available in this section. The wood testifies of the many visitors who have carved the memory of the trip. Numerous license plates, flags and other items from across the world also testify the international audience.

The smaller area has a craft shop and a relatively open platform. A fair variety of souvenirs can be purchased and you’ll be sure to hear some Jamaican stories from some of the Fishermen that hang out there.

Our hunger for adventure led us to take a little swim in the waist-deep water that surrounds the wooden structure. If you venture far enough, you’ll even realize that some places are even shallower.

After an hour or two later, we made our way back as the sun was meeting the horizon. This was a scenic backdrop as the image of Pelican Bar faded.
